Diablo IV Paladin Guide: Unlock, Oaths and How to Level One
Paladin belongs to the Lord of Hatred expansion. Here is the unlock, how Juggernaut, Zealot, Judicator and Disciple differ, and the order to level one in.

Paladin is not in the base game. It launched with the second expansion, Lord of Hatred, alongside Warlock.
Buying Lord of Hatred also includes Vessel of Hatred, so one expansion purchase is enough to play it.
Players who pre-purchased could use the class in the base game before launch. After release, ownership of the expansion is what matters.
What the four oaths do
| Oath | Official focus | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Juggernaut | Soaking damage and pushing forward | Players who want to hold the front line |
| Zealot | Melee burst and pressure | Players who want to fight in close |
| Judicator | Judgement and holy spells | Players who want area setup with ranged options |
| Disciple | Conviction and self-preservation | Players who want survivability and group utility |
Community sites point at build names such as Shield Charge, Divine Lance, Blessed Hammer and Shield of Retribution. Those lists change with the season; the oath is the long-term choice.
You can level several characters to try different oaths.
How to level one
- Choose the oath at creation. It sets which way the skill tree branches, and changing later is expensive.
- Unlock mobility and mitigation first. Paladin’s strength is staying upright, so survivability moves you faster than damage early on.
- Match the weapon to the oath. The class leans on shields and one-handed weapons; check the in-game skill text for what each ability needs.
- Add Paragon and upgrades after max level. The general order is on how to build.
- Set up War Plans in the endgame. That is Lord of Hatred’s endgame spine, and season 15 made it account-wide.
Three common mistakes
- Stacking damage with no mitigation. Paladin is a front-line class. Without blocking and resistances it dies faster than a glass-cannon build at high difficulty.
- Treating the oath as cosmetic. It changes skill branches and the shape of the build, not just the look.
- Ignoring the season system. Season 15’s Soul Splinters carry a price, and Paladin’s jewellery trade-off differs from other classes. The mechanics are on the season 15 page.
What else is in the expansion
Lord of Hatred also adds the Skovos region, Horadric Cube crafting, Talisman set bonuses and the Echoing Hatred endgame activity. The overview is on the Lord of Hatred page.
